Task Description: Roadshow: Map Extents

This document modified on: 15 April 2002

Task: Separate the STS Project Area into manageable units for the Decision Meetings Roadshow Project.

Rationale: To allow the display and labeling of all necessary data quickly.

Timeline: September-October

Brief Process Description:

Creates an Object DataBase for each polygon in the State Extent theme. The odb contains a record for each theme in the View. The record consists of a list of features in that theme that intersect the State Extent polygon. When an odb is loaded into a View, only the features in the odb are displayed.
The digitized project boundaries, delimiting grids, and treatment block themes are not included in the list of themes recorded in the object databases. This mean that regardless of which State Extent is loaded into the View, all features of these themes will be visible. The State Extent theme isn’t included either.
Labels the quad and county polygons.
Labels the catch from the previous year.
Labels the current year’s catch.
Sets the scale threshold for each theme. This increases the legibility of the View by preventing some data from being displayed at smaller scales.

Dm02_states2odb_auto

Locates the State Extents theme in the View.

Makes the State Extents theme the only active theme in the View.

Gets list of all states in the State Extents theme.

For each state in the list, does the following:

Selects the State Extent polygon for that state.
Sets all themes except the user digitized themes and the State Extent theme active.
Selects the features in each active theme that intersect the selected State Extent polygon.
Creates a new text file in the \dm_cd\map_extents\ directory named with the selected state name.
Creates a new odb file in the \dm_cd\map_extents\ idrectory named with the selected state name.
Writes the name of each active theme to the text file.
Writes the selected set of features for each theme to the odb file.
Clears the selection for each theme.

dm02_restore_odblist

Allows the user to select a state extent to load from the odb files in the \dm_cd\map_extents\ directory.

Sets all themes in the View inactive.

Checks to see if a state extent is already loaded and unloads it.

Reads the text file associated with the selected odb file.

Checks to see that all themes listed in the text file are still present in the View.

If all themes are not present, tells the user which theme is missing and exits.

Runs the dm_scale_thrshld_off srcript which unsets the scale threshold for the following themes:

Current year’s catch

Previous year’s catch

STS Quads

Il Townships

WI Minor Civil Divisions

This allows all features in these themes to be displayed and selected.

Reads the selected State Extent ODB file.
Sets the definition of each theme in the ODB to display only those records that appear in the ODB file.
Zooms the View to the extent of the visible Minor Civil Divisions, if the state is WI, to the extent of the townships, if the state is IL, or to the extent of the visible quads for all other states.
Sets the Name of the View to include the name of the selected State Extent.
Labels the appropriate themes and sets the scale thresholds by running these scripts:

Dm_qdcnty_labels

For the County, Quad, IL township, and PPA themes, does the following:

Locates theme in the View.
Sets View scale to give the text size a reference.
Selects all visible features.
Gets County theme’s Text Positioner property.
Sets the Font Family and Style.
Sets Text size and color.
Labels the features using the Text Positioner properties.
Unselects all features.

Notes: For the PPA theme, labels the theme with both ID and Priority values. This process is run after the Object Database has been implemented to reduce the number of features that need to be labeled.

Locates USGS quad theme in the View.

Sets the minimum scale threshold to 1 (Won’t show this theme’s features at scales smaller than 1:1)

Sets the maximum scale threshold to 1500000 (Won’t show this theme’s features at scales larger than 1:1500000)

Implements the scale threshold for USGS Quads theme.

Locates IL townships theme in the View.

Sets the minimum scale threshold to 1 (Won’t show this theme’s features at scales smaller than 1:1)

Sets the maximum scale threshold to 1500000 (Won’t show this theme’s features at scales larger than 1:1500000)

Implements the scale threshold for IL townships theme.

Locates WI Minor Civil Divisions theme in the View.

Sets the minimum scale threshold to 1 (Won’t show this theme’s features at scales smaller than 1:1)
